Xsara diesel exhaust pressure issue

Cheers for the quick reply. How would I know if it's trying to do a DPF regeneration? And where exactly is that exhaust back pressure sensor located?

Well, when it tries to regenerate, usually the engine note changes, idle is a bit rougher, and you might smell burning. But with a faulty sensor, it probably won't even attempt it! The exhaust back pressure sensor is usually near the DPF itself, somewhere along the exhaust pipe. Honestly, unless you are really comfortable working on cars, I'd advise a workshop. Messing with the DPF can be a pain!

Thanks. Took it to a local garage, and you were spot on - the exhaust back pressure sensor was the culprit. New one fitted and the car is running perfectly again. Cost me 245€ all in. Appreciate the help!

I had something similar happen with my Xsara (also diesel). Reduced power, stinky exhaust…sounds familiar! Did you check the exhaust back pressure sensor? That little bugger can cause all sorts of grief with the DPF system. Is the car trying to do a DPF regeneration?
