Xsara engine stalling at idle

Good day. I am writing to you with a problem I've been experiencing with my 2004 Citroen Xsara (gasoline engine). Lately, the check engine light has been illuminating, and I've also noticed that the engine occasionally stalls when idling, which is concerning. I suspect it might be a problem related to the fuel tank ventilation valve. I've read that clogged hoses could be the culprit, but I'm not entirely sure how to proceed with further diagnostics. The car has 243754 km on the clock. Has anyone encountered something similar?

I had similar symptoms in my Xsara a while back. The check engine light plus stalling at idle definitely sounds like it could be related to the EVAP system, which is responsible for managing fuel tank vapors. When you mention clogged hoses, are you referring to the ones connected to the purge valve? That valve plays a crucial role in regulating the flow of fuel vapors into the engine. I would recommend investigating it.

Thank you for your reply. Yes, I was referring to the hoses connected to the purge valve. I understand the general function of the valve, but I'm not entirely clear on how to properly inspect the hoses for clogs or damage. Could you provide more specific guidance on what to look for or any tests I could perform to confirm the diagnosis?

Given the symptoms and your mileage, it is quite likely the purge valve or associated hoses are the issue. Inspecting them yourself can be tricky without proper tools. If you lack the equipment and experience, it might be wise to take your Xsara to a workshop. They can perform a smoke test to pinpoint any leaks in the EVAP system and properly diagnose the problem.

Thank you for the advice! It was indeed the tank ventilation valve, just as I suspected, and the hoses were clogged. The repair ended up costing 175€, but at least the car is running smoothly again. I appreciate your help in pointing me in the right direction!
