Xsara Gear Shift Indicator Failure

I'm experiencing an issue with my 2003 Citroen Xsara (gasoline engine). The gear shift indicator display isn't working. The speedometer shows no gear selection, and I can't engage any gear. The automatic transmission seems to be shifting erratically, slipping and making grinding noises. The error memory has logged an error related to this. Any thoughts?

I had a similar problem with my 2012 Opel Insignia. The symptoms you describe sound eerily familiar. In my case, the automatic transmission was behaving strangely, and the gear selection indicator on the dashboard went haywire. I also experienced some slipping and rough shifting. Did you notice any specific conditions under which the problem is more prominent, such as after the engine warms up or during certain driving maneuvers?

The issue seems to worsen after the engine has warmed up. Cold starts are usually fine, but after about 20 minutes of driving, the problem becomes noticeable. Are you implying that the root cause might be related to temperature or some other environmental factor?

That's exactly what I suspect. In my case, it turned out to be a defective control unit affecting the transmission. The heat seemed to exacerbate the problem, causing the unit to malfunction. Considering your symptoms and the error code, a faulty control unit is a likely culprit. Given the complexity of modern automatic transmissions, I'd recommend consulting a trusted mechanic to diagnose and repair the issue properly. It might be an expensive repair, but neglecting it could lead to further damage.

I appreciate your help in identifying the likely cause. I will take your advice and schedule an appointment with a mechanic to inspect the control unit. Just got the car back - the control unit was indeed faulty and was replaced. Cost me about 1000€, but now it works like a charm!
