Xsara oil pressure warning light

My 2002 Citroen Xsara with a gasoline engine has the oil pressure warning lamp on, and a warning light appeared in the speedometer. The car has 71544 km on it. Could this be due to the extended maintenance interval, or perhaps oil sludge buildup? I'm trying to avoid a major repair.

I also drive a Xsara, and I had similar issues a while back. Did you check the oil color? If it's dark and sludgy, that could definitely be it. Have you tried any oil additives to clean the engine?

Thanks! I haven't checked the oil color yet, but will do that now. Which oil additives did you use when you experienced similar issues? I am trying to understand if it can be solved without going to the workshop.

I didn't use any additives, to be honest. The oil pressure light scared me enough to just take it straight to a workshop. They told me it was likely the same thing – old oil creating sludge. Best to get it checked properly to avoid bigger problems down the line.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I checked the oil and you were right, it looks bad. I took it to the workshop today, and it turned out the maintenance interval had indeed been exceeded. An oil change and engine flush cost me 165€. Hopefully, this will resolve the issue.
