Xterra check engine light air valve issue
Summary of the thread
A 2003 Nissan Xterra owner experienced a persistent check engine light and suspected an air valve issue. A suggestion was made to inspect the hose connecting the pump to the valve, as a defective hose could disrupt manifold pressure and trigger the light. Upon inspection, a cracked hose was identified as the problem, and replacing it resolved the issue, eliminating the check engine light.

Engine stalling? Not that I've noticed. But that hose connection you mentioned – is that a common problem area? Is it easy to spot a crack or defect?

Hose connections get brittle over time because of engine heat. Check for cracks or looseness. If you find anything that doesn't look right, even a small split, that could well be the culprit. I'd suggest a workshop visit.

Thanks a bunch for the advice! Turns out you were spot on about that hose. Took it to a local shop, they replaced the defective hose from the pump to the valve for 175€, and the check engine light is gone! You saved me a ton of guesswork!

I had a similar issue with my Xterra. Check the hose connecting the pump to the valve, it could be defective. When that hose is cracked, the manifold pressure isn't right, messing with your air intake and causing the check engine light to come on. Does your engine stall sometimes?
