Xterra Engine Won't Start

I'm having trouble with my 2010 Nissan Xterra, gasoline engine, 124714 km. The engine won't start, stalls at idle, check engine light's on, rough running, high fuel consumption and it also has error codes stored in the memory. From my diagnosis, it seems like a fuel pump issue. I suspect it's a defective cable or plug connection. Has anyone seen this before?

Summary of the thread

The 2010 Nissan Xterra is experiencing issues with starting, stalling at idle, rough running, high fuel consumption, and a check engine light, which suggests a fuel delivery problem. The initial suspicion was a defective cable or plug connection related to the fuel pump. It was advised to check the fuel pump relay, wiring harness, and measure fuel pressure to confirm the issue. Ultimately, the problem was confirmed to be a faulty connection related to the fuel pump, which was resolved at a repair shop.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

I had a similar issue with my Xterra. The symptoms you describe—engine not starting and stalling— are definitely indicative of fuel delivery problems. A defective fuel pump could certainly be the culprit, especially if the check engine light is on. Before you replace the entire pump assembly, it might be useful to check the fuel pump relay and the wiring harness leading to the pump. A faulty relay or a corroded connector can sometimes mimic the symptoms of a failing pump. Have you checked the fuel pressure at the fuel rail using a fuel pressure gauge? This would help confirm whether the pump is actually delivering the correct amount of fuel.

Thanks! I appreciate the advice regarding checking the fuel pump relay and wiring harness, I will definitely check them out. Could you please tell me a bit more about fuel pressure measurements? I’m not sure how to perform them.

Okay, so checking the fuel pressure at the fuel rail involves connecting a fuel pressure gauge to the test port on the fuel rail. This port usually has a Schrader valve, similar to what you'd find on a tire. With the engine running (or attempting to start it), the gauge will display the fuel pressure. Compare this reading to the manufacturer's specifications (you can usually find this information in the service manual or online). If the pressure is significantly lower than specified, it would strongly suggest a problem with the fuel pump or related components such as the fuel filter or pressure regulator. Nevertheless, in my case, the issue was indeed with the fuel pump itself, so you may need professional assistance and visit a workshop. Good luck with that.

Thanks for the explanation and heads-up. I took your advice and double-checked the fuel pump relay and wiring, but no luck. I took it to the shop, they confirmed it was a faulty connection related to the fuel pump. Total repair cost: 95€. Thanks again!
