Xterra Misfire Diagnosis
Summary of the thread
A 2004 Nissan Xterra was experiencing rough running, a check engine light, jerking during acceleration, and loss of power, with combustion misfire codes. The initial suspicion was a faulty fuel pump, but further discussion suggested checking ignition coils and fuel injectors. Ultimately, a defective fuel injector was identified and replaced, resolving the misfire issue.

The rough running is most noticeable at idle and low speeds, but it's still there when I'm cruising, just not as bad. How would I go about checking the ignition coils? Is that something I can do myself, or do I need special tools?

Okay, if it's worse at idle, that does point away from the fuel pump a bit. Checking ignition coils involves using a multimeter to test their resistance, and visually inspecting them for cracks or damage. It's doable yourself if you're comfortable with basic auto electrics, but if not, a workshop can diagnose it pretty quickly. Could also be dirty or faulty injectors.

Thanks for the input! I ended up taking it to a shop, and it turned out to be a defective fuel injector, just like you said. They replaced it, and the misfires are gone. Cost me 515€, but at least it's running smoothly again!

Misfires are a pain. Is the rough running all the time, or just at idle? Have you checked the ignition coils? Those can cause misfires too, and are easier to test than messing with the fuel pump right away.
