XTrail Diesel EGR Valve Issue

Thanks for the quick reply! It seems worse when cold, yes. What do you mean by "vacuum leaks"? Is that related to the recirculation?

A vacuum leak means that unmetered air is entering the engine, disrupting the air-fuel mixture. This can cause rough idling and affect the EGR system's performance, as the EGR valve relies on vacuum to operate properly. Given the symptoms and the mileage, it's likely the EGR valve itself. I would suggest you visit a workshop and have them check the valve and the whole system, as a faulty EGR valve can cause further damage.

Thanks a lot. I took it to the shop; turned out the EGR valve was indeed defective. They replaced it for 355€. Runs like new now!

I had similar symptoms with my XTrail. Reduced power, check engine light, rough running... Does it happen mostly when the engine is cold? EGR valves often get clogged up, especially in diesel engines. Have you checked for any obvious vacuum leaks around the EGR valve or intake manifold? Sometimes a simple visual inspection can reveal a cracked hose.
