How did you diagnose the camshaft position sensor? Were there specific error codes or tests that led you to that?

The error code pointed to the camshaft position sensor being out of range. I did a resistance test on the sensor with a multimeter – it was way off. Considering your VANOS theory, getting a proper diagnostic at a workshop might be best. They can pinpoint the cause and save you money.

I took your advice and consulted a mechanic. The diagnosis confirmed a defect in the inlet camshaft solenoid valve, and it needed to be replaced. The total repair cost was 250€. Thanks for the help!

Sounds familiar! I had a similar issue with my old Volvo V70. Same symptoms – check engine light and bad fuel economy. It was a dodgy camshaft position sensor. Might be worth checking, even though it's VANOS-related in your case.
