Yaris Diesel Power Loss Smoke

My 2011 Toyota Yaris diesel with 175,000 km feels like it has way less power, especially when accelerating. Plus, there's lots of smoke when I put my foot down. Any ideas what could cause this? I'm not very car-savvy.

Summary of the thread

A 2011 Toyota Yaris diesel with 175,000 km is experiencing power loss and excessive smoke during acceleration. The likely cause is a clogged or defective diesel particulate filter (DPF), which is part of the exhaust system and reduces emissions. Solutions include cleaning the DPF if it's not too clogged or replacing it if it's defective. A diagnostic scan by a mechanic can confirm the issue and determine the appropriate action.

Sounds like a diesel particulate filter (DPF) problem. It's part of the exhaust system and reduces emissions. When they get clogged or defective, you can experience those symptoms. I had a similar issue with my old Peugeot 308, and it turned out the DPF was completely shot. The reduced power and smoke are classic signs. Has the car been inspected recently? A diagnostic scan should point to the DPF quickly.

A DPF, huh? I've never heard of that! Can that be cleaned, or am I looking at a replacement? And how much did it cost to fix it on your Peugeot? Just trying to get an idea of what I'm up against...

Sometimes a DPF can be cleaned, but it depends on how badly it's clogged and whether it's actually defective. Cleaning involves forcing a special cleaning solution through the filter to remove the soot and ash. However, if it's damaged internally, replacement is usually the only option. In my case, cleaning wasn't an option. It's worth getting it checked out by a mechanic. They can run a forced regeneration (cleaning cycle) or tell you if it is really broken. I'd recommend a workshop visit.

Thanks so much for the info! I took it to the shop, and you were spot on – it was the DPF! They said it was completely defective and needed replacing. Cost me about 1550€ all in, but at least it's running smoothly again now. Really appreciate the help!
