Yaris engine smoke

My 2010 Toyota Yaris with a gasoline engine is acting up. The check engine light is on, engine power is seriously reduced, and it's puffing out smoke when I accelerate. I suspect a crankcase ventilation valve issue. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

I had very similar symptoms on my Yaris: check engine light, performance drop, and increased oil consumption. I'd advise checking for excessive crankcase pressure. If the PCV is blocked, the crankcase won't vent correctly, causing oil leaks, elevated pressure, and smoke.

Excessive crankcase pressure? How do I check that, and where is the PCV valve located on these engines? I'm fairly handy but don't want to start ripping things apart without more information.

To check, you'll need a manometer to measure the pressure at the oil filler cap or dipstick tube. The PCV valve location varies slightly, but it is generally on the valve cover or intake manifold. Given your symptoms, I suggest a diagnostic check by a professional. With a defective crankcase ventilation, you risk consequential engine damage. The repair could be around 360€.

Understood. I'll book it in with my local garage ASAP. Thanks for confirming my suspicions and the heads-up about potential knock-on effects. Knowing is half the battle. Hopefully, it won't be too expensive.
