Filling up seems normal, no weird pressure or anything. What exactly does the tank ventilation do, and could a clogged purge valve cause those symptoms? Is that what fixed it for you?

The tank ventilation, from what I understand, manages the pressure in the fuel tank. The purge valve is a part of it. My mechanic mentioned something about how the system is designed to capture fuel vapors and send them back to the engine to be burned, to reduce emissions. It's a closed system. I'm no expert but my car had similar symptoms and I took it to the workshop. Maybe you should do the same. They found a problem with the ventilation and replaced some hoses.

I took it to my local mechanic, and you were spot on. Turns out the hoses for the tank ventilation valve were clogged, just like we thought. They cleaned everything out and replaced a couple of hoses. Cost me 175€. Runs like a champ now! Appreciate the help!

I had a similar issue with my Yaris – not sure what year it is. The check engine light and stalling sounds familiar. From what I remember, it could be the pressure sensor related to the fuel tank ventilation. Does your car have any trouble when you're filling up the gas tank?
