Yaris Hybrid Smoke Acceleration

I'm experiencing an issue with my 2013 Toyota Yaris Hybrid, which has 159214 km on the clock. Recently, a warning light appeared, and I've noticed smoke when accelerating. Diagnostics point to the exhaust back pressure sensor. I suspect it's defective, but I'm looking for insights before replacing it.

Summary of the thread

A 2013 Toyota Yaris Hybrid with 159,214 km is experiencing a warning light and smoke during acceleration. Diagnostics suggest a defective exhaust back pressure sensor as the cause. The issue may be related to the emission control system, and checking the sensor's wiring and connections is advised. If the wiring is intact, replacing the sensor is recommended to prevent further engine performance and emission issues.

Hey there! I drive a Yaris Hybrid myself, and your issue sounds eerily familiar to what I experienced last year. The warning light combined with the smoke points towards a possible problem with the emission control system, which can often be traced back to the pressure sensor. Have you checked the sensor's wiring or any related connections? Sometimes it's just a loose connection causing the problem.

Thanks for the quick reply. I did visually inspect the wiring and connections, but everything seemed intact. Did your Yaris exhibit similar symptoms, and if so, did replacing the sensor resolve the issue entirely, or were there other underlying problems?

Yes, my Yaris had almost the exact same symptoms – warning light and smoke during acceleration. Given that you've checked the wiring, it's highly likely the sensor itself is faulty. I would recommend taking it to a workshop to confirm the diagnosis and get a quote for the replacement. My local mechanic told me it may also impact engine performance and vehicle emissions if not addressed.

Okay, thanks for confirming that the sensor may be the issue. I'll take it to my mechanic for a final diagnosis and replacement. Your experience has been very helpful. It was indeed the exhaust back pressure sensor, repair cost was 245€.
