Yaris Jerking Acceleration Exhaust Smell
Summary of the thread
A 2004 Toyota Yaris diesel is experiencing jerking during acceleration, a check engine light, reduced engine power, stalling when idling, and a strong exhaust smell. These symptoms suggest potential issues with the air intake system or a vacuum leak. A similar case pointed to a defective intake manifold, which required professional diagnosis and replacement.

Thanks! I haven't inspected the air intake system yet. When you had similar issues with your Yaris, did you notice a strong exhaust smell and error codes? Also, was the problem sudden?

Yes, the exhaust smell was there! It was like the car was running too rich. And yeah, error codes! Diagnosing it myself was a headache. Given the symptoms, especially the check engine light and stalling, I'd suggest taking it to a trusted workshop. It could save time and frustration. It sounds like it could be something more than a simple fix.

Thanks for the advice and sharing your experiences! I've scheduled an appointment with a local workshop for a professional diagnosis. Turns out, the intake manifold was defective, scorching caused leaking, and it had to be replaced. The repair cost me 1180€.

Hey! I also drive a Yaris (not sure about the year), and your symptoms sound familiar. The jerking, check engine light, and rough running could point to something similar. Have you checked for damage around the air intake? A leak there could cause problems with the manifold pressure. See if anything is visibly cracked or loose. Maybe it's just a gasket leak?
