Z4 Door Handle Glitch? Fix Those Keyless Entry Fails Now

Z4 owners, Need help with door handle/keyless access problems! My 2011 Z4 (43,709 KM, gas engine) is giving me headaches. The keyless entry stopped working, and the computer shows battery and open-circuit errors. Had a not-so-great experience with my last mechanic, so I'm hesitant to go back. Has anyone dealt with similar door handle electronics issues? What was the actual problem and how much did repairs cost? Looking for recommendations on reliable fixes.

Hey there, I actually had a similar issue with my 2014 BMW M235i last month. The keyless comfort access was acting up, showing the same errors you're describing. Took it to my mechanic and turns out it was the wiring harness connection to the door handle sensor that had corroded. Some moisture had gotten in and messed up the contacts. Thankfully it wasn't a major repair, they cleaned the connections, replaced the damaged wiring portion, and resealed everything properly. The door handle itself was fine, it was just the electrical connection causing the problems. It took about 2 hours to diagnose and fix. Much better than having to replace the entire handle assembly, which I was worried about at first. Just make sure whoever works on it knows BMW electronics well, these comfort access systems can be tricky to diagnose if you don't know what to look for. The wiring is the most common failure point rather than the handle sensors themselves.

Thanks for sharing that, really glad to hear it was just the wiring and not the whole handle assembly! I'm dealing with basically the same thing right now on my Z4. Just curious, do you remember roughly how much the repair ended up costing you? Also, has everything been working properly since they fixed it, or have you noticed any other quirks?

Hey again! Glad to give you an update, the repair turned out great on my M235i. Since you asked, I paid 95€ to get the cable connection fixed, which was way less than I initially feared. They just needed to repair that faulty plug connection that was causing all the trouble. The best part is everything's been working perfectly since the fix, no more error messages or keyless entry problems. It's like having a new car again! The peace of mind was definitely worth the money spent. I know you mentioned being hesitant about mechanics, but honestly, once you find someone who really knows BMWs, these electrical issues are usually pretty straightforward for them to sort out. The key is finding someone who specializes in BMW electronics. Let me know how it goes with your Z4. I'm betting it's probably the same issue I had, especially since the symptoms sound identical.

Thanks so much, that's a huge relief! You were absolutely right about everything. I finally got up the nerve to take it to a new mechanic who specializes in BMW electronics. Same exact issue as yours, corroded wiring connection. They fixed it in about an hour and a half, and it cost me way less than I was dreading. The funny part was watching the mechanic's face when he found the problem. He just smiled and said "Yep, seen this a hundred times before." Makes me feel silly for putting it off so long. The keyless entry is working perfectly now, and those annoying error messages are finally gone. Really appreciate you sharing your experience, it gave me the confidence to get it sorted instead of letting it drag on. These fancy electronics can be intimidating, but sometimes it's just a simple fix like this. Now I know who to call if anything else acts up!
