Zoe Overvoltage Faults

I'm experiencing an overvoltage issue with my 2016 Renault Zoe (electric engine) at 161530 km. The car's throwing numerous fault memory entries related to overvoltage. I'm also seeing failures across various systems, a weak battery when starting, and general electrical malfunctions. Could a heavily discharged or defective battery be the cause?

Summary of the thread

The 2016 Renault Zoe is experiencing overvoltage faults, with numerous system failures and a weak battery at startup. A heavily discharged or defective 12V battery is suspected as the cause. It is suggested that the issue might be related to the DC-DC converter, which charges the 12V battery from the main battery. Professional diagnosis and repair are recommended to prevent potential damage to the vehicle's electronics, and the solution involved replacing the 12V battery.

Sounds familiar! I had a similar problem with my old 2008 Peugeot 207. It drove me nuts! Did you check the alternator? While the Zoe is electric, a faulty 12V battery or its charging system could cause power surge and all sorts of weird electrical gremlins. Does it happen at specific times, like when you use certain functions?

Thanks for the quick reply! You mentioned the alternator on your Peugeot – where is the equivalent component located in the Zoe, and how would I go about testing it? Is it something a novice can do, or should I leave it to the professionals?

Ah, on the Zoe, there isn't a traditional alternator like in my old Peugeot, it's a DC-DC converter that charges the 12V battery from the main battery. Honestly, diagnosing issues in electric vehicles can be tricky. Given the overvoltage codes and the potential for damaging sensitive electronics, I'd strongly suggest taking it to a workshop. Better safe than sorry!

Thanks for confirming. Sounds like professional intervention is needed. I'll take it to the shop. The repair ended up costing me 290€. They replaced the 12V battery.
