2008 BMW 1 Series: Malfunction of the exhaust flap?

Hello everyone! My 2008 BMW 1 Series petrol engine (with a good 102,000 km on the clock) is causing me a bit of concern. As soon as the engine is cold, it gets quite loud and the exhaust also seems louder than usual. I fear a malfunction of the exhaust flap? Have any of you ever had similar symptoms and can tell me about your experiences at the mechanic? I haven't had a particularly good experience recently and am therefore looking for an exchange here. Many thanks in advance!

Hello, I can well understand that you are worried. I recently had my 2005 BMW 3 Series in the workshop because of similar symptoms. My exhaust was also louder than usual and the engine made strange noises when I started it in the morning. The mechanic found that the exhaust flap was actually broken. It was a serious problem, as a faulty exhaust flap can lead to higher fuel consumption and loss of power. But they fixed it quickly and my car is now running perfectly again. Best regards!

Hi, thanks for your reply! That actually sounds like the same problem I'm having right now. Can you happen to remember how much you paid to have this fixed? And have there been any other problems since then or has everything stayed fine? Thank you very much and best regards!

Hi, no problem, glad I can help! When I took my car to the garage for the problem, they found that the wiring harness/plug was faulty. They fixed it for me and cost me €155. Since the repair, my car has been running great. And as you correctly guessed, the exhaust flap in the exhaust was indeed the cause of the loud noise. Since the visit to the mechanic, the problem has been solved and my car is fine. I hope everything goes smoothly for you too! Best regards!

Hi, thanks for sharing your experience, it was very helpful! I'm glad to hear your car is running well since the repair. 155 sounds reasonable and I'll definitely get my car checked. I hope mine isn't anything worse either and that everything runs well again after the repair. Thanks again for the information! Best regards!

Servus, I think you are talking about a 135i, as these vehicles had a flap. It is also not unusual for the exhaust flap mechanism to be stiff, which means that the vacuum box can no longer adjust the flap. It is therefore always advisable to check the linkage to see whether the flap can still be adjusted at all.
