My buddy, who is an automotive mechatronics technician, took a look at it and confirmed my suspicions: Defective air conditioning control unit. So you were probably not completely wrong with your suspicion. It was a silly thing, but not too serious. A full working day for the replacement and my car was fit again. Since I had it fixed by a mechanic, however, the defect in the air conditioning control unit has been rectified. Since the repair, I've actually had no more problems with the ventilation.
