4Runner preheating lamp and check engine light

Having trouble with my 2009 Toyota 4Runner diesel. It's got about 108011 km on it. The preheating lamp won't switch off, and the check engine light is on. Plus, I'm seeing smoke when I accelerate. Initial checks suggest it's a bad glow control unit, maybe from a faulty cable or plug. Anyone else run into this?

I had similar stuff happening with my 2012 Opel Insignia. Preheating light stayed on, then the engine light came on. Different brand, but could it be the glow plugs? I also had some stalling, and the error codes pointed to a misfire. Did you check the glow plugs themselves?

Thanks for sharing that. The glow plugs are a good thought. Did you actually look at the glow plugs, or did the fault codes tell you enough? Also, how many km did your Opel Insignia have when this happened?

The fault codes were pretty clear, but the mechanic confirmed it when he swapped the glow plugs. My Insignia had around 120000 km when I first noticed the problem. Honestly, I'd get your 4Runner to a shop ASAP.

Thanks, I appreciate the advice. The shop found a defective glow control unit because of a corroded plug. The repair, with parts and labor, was about 95€. Your input helped a lot with figuring this out.
