4Runner Rough Cold Start

Having trouble with my 2007 Toyota 4Runner diesel. It's running really rough during cold starts. I've got an error code popping up, haven't pulled it yet. Fuel consumption has definitely gone up. Suspecting it might be a defective electric auxiliary heater, the PTC heater? Anyone else experienced similar issues? Any thoughts or advice?

Summary of the thread

The 2007 Toyota 4Runner diesel was experiencing rough cold starts and increased fuel consumption, with a suspected defective electric auxiliary heater, known as the PTC heater. A similar issue was noted in an Audi A4 TDI, where the PTC heater was the cause. After consulting a workshop, it was confirmed that the PTC heater was indeed defective, and replacing it resolved the issues, improving engine performance, fuel consumption, and heating efficiency.

I had a similar issue with my old Audi A4 TDI. Symptoms sound very familiar. Rough cold starts and increased fuel consumption. Does it feel like you're getting cold air even when the engine is warm?

Thanks for the quick reply! Yes, now that you mention it, the heating isn't as effective as it used to be, especially in the first few minutes. The blower motor seems to work fine, but the air coming out isn't as warm. Did the PTC heater cause these issues in your Audi as well?

Affirmative. In my A4, the PTC heater was indeed the culprit. Considering the symptoms and the error code you mentioned, it is highly probable that your 4Runner has the same problem. I would suggest consulting a workshop for further diagnosis and repair. It's best to have it checked by a professional.

Thanks a lot for your help! I took your advice and brought the 4Runner to a workshop. Turns out, the PTC heater was indeed defective. The repair, including the new part and labor, cost me around 350€. The engine runs much better now, and the fuel consumption is back to normal. The heating system also works like a charm again. Really appreciate your input!
