4Runner rough running

Alright, gearheads, I'm pulling my hair out! My 2002 Toyota 4Runner diesel is running rough. Symptoms? Higher fuel consumption, feels like I'm towing a boat anchor (reduced power), stalls at idle sometimes, and puffs out smoke when I accelerate. Odo reading 181452 km. I'm suspecting a faulty fuel injection system. Any ideas before I torch this thing?

I had similar issues with my 4Runner. I would check the cable and plug connections of the fuel injection components. Sometimes a loose or corroded connection can cause intermittent problems that mimic a failing injector.

Interesting. Which specific cable and plug connections are you referring to? Any in particular that gave you trouble?

On mine, it was the plug going into the fuel rail pressure sensor. But honestly, check them all. If wiggling any of them changes the engine behavior, you've probably found your culprit. The fix will probably be easy, but you might want to check with a workshop.

Dude, you're a lifesaver! Turns out it WAS a defective plug connection on one of the injectors like you said. Cleaned it up, the engine's running smooth now. It cost me 95€ and a good lesson. Thanks a lot!
