A6 AC Dead: Quick Diagnosis Guide & Cost Estimates

My A6s AC gave up completely, no cold air, not even turning on. Car is a 2002 Audi A6 with gasoline engine at 94895 KM. Started happening suddenly. Anyone dealt with similar AC diagnostics before? Worried about getting ripped off at the shop after my last experience, so would appreciate advice on potential causes and estimated repair costs. Could it be a refrigerant leak or something worse?

Had the same AC efficiency problems on my 2005 Audi A4 2.0T. The symptoms matched exactly, complete AC failure without warning signs. The root cause was a failed pressure switch combined with leaking valves in the AC system. This is a serious issue since it affects the entire AC operation and temperature control capabilities. The pressure switch stops the compressor from engaging when refrigerant levels drop too low, which is a safety feature. Required repairs included: Full system diagnosis with pressure testing, Replacement of expansion valve, New pressure switch installation, System evacuation and recharge, Leak detection check The AC maintenance revealed multiple leaks at valve connection points. These issues typically start small but worsen rapidly when left unchecked. The compressor fortunately had no damage, which would have made repairs much more extensive. This type of failure is common in Audi models from that era once they pass 90000 KM. The repair addressed both the immediate AC noise and restored proper cooling. Would recommend having it properly diagnosed soon to prevent potential compressor damage.

Thanks for sharing those details. Your AC issues sound very similar to what I experienced. I also needed a system evacuation and recharge plus some valve work on my A6 last summer. The blower motor was making a weird noise at first which got me worried about more serious problems. After the repair, my cooling system has been working perfectly with no temperature control issues. Just wondering, do you remember roughly what you paid for the full fix? And has everything stayed working properly since the repair? Always good to know if these fixes tend to last.

Glad to give an update on my AC repair experience. After the mechanic fixed those faulty valves in the cooling system, the AC has worked flawlessly for over a year now. The total repair cost came to 1000 Euro, which included replacing multiple valves and a complete system check. The work addressed both the blower motor noise and restored proper temperature control. The AC relay and pressure switch were also inspected during the service to ensure everything was functioning correctly. The investment was worth it since the repair has proven reliable with consistent cooling performance. These types of repairs typically last several years when done properly. The key was catching it before the compressor got damaged, which would have pushed costs much higher. The cooling system now maintains steady temperatures without any of the previous issues.

Got the AC fixed last week and wanted to share how it went. The mechanic confirmed it was indeed the pressure switch and some bad valve seals causing the problem. They ran a full AC diagnostics check which showed low refrigerant due to those leaks. The repair involved: New pressure switch, Valve seal replacement, Full system evacuation and recharge, AC efficiency testing Total cost came to 850 Euro, which was actually less than expected. The blower motor started working perfectly once they restored proper pressure in the system. Been running great for the past week with proper cold air and no strange noises. Really glad I got it checked before summer hits full force. The shop explained everything clearly and even showed me the faulty parts. Much better experience than my previous repair nightmare. If anyone else runs into similar AC issues, definitely worth getting it looked at quickly before it leads to bigger problems.
