ABS Fault Peugeot 407

I'm having some trouble with my 2006 Peugeot 407 (gasoline engine). Recently, the ABS lamp on the dashboard has been lighting up intermittently. I've also noticed some traction problems, especially in wet conditions. It feels like the ABS system is just not working correctly. The car has about 143906 km on the clock. I've checked the ABS sensors (visually) and they seem okay, but I'm not really sure what else to look for. Has anyone experienced anything similar?

The symptoms you describe are indicative of a potential fault within the ABS system of your Peugeot 407. The simultaneous illumination of the ABS lamp and compromised traction control strongly suggests a malfunction. Before proceeding with any invasive diagnostics, it would be prudent to ascertain whether any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) are stored within the vehicle's engine control unit (ECU). Have you performed a diagnostic scan to retrieve any such codes? Moreover, a thorough inspection of the transmission system is advisable, as speed sensor irregularities can be related to the ABS malfunction you describe.

Thanks for the quick reply! I haven't done a proper diagnostic scan yet, just a quick look for any obvious issues. I don't have the equipment to read the codes myself. Could a faulty transmission speed sensor really cause the ABS to fail completely? Is there anything else I should check before taking it to a mechanic?

Yes, a defective transmission speed sensor can indeed precipitate ABS failure. The ABS system relies on speed input from various sensors, including those associated with the transmission, to function correctly. Inaccurate or absent speed signals can trigger the ABS malfunction and associated warning lights. Given your limited diagnostic capabilities, it is advisable to seek professional assistance. Based on the information provided and the year/model of your vehicle, it is possible that the ABS control unit itself is failing. The affected control unit may be defective, triggering the errors. Going to a qualified workshop equipped with appropriate diagnostic tools is the most sensible course of action.

Thanks so much for the advice. I took it to a workshop, and after running diagnostics, they confirmed it was a faulty ABS control unit. The total repair cost came to about 1000€. Replacing the control unit seems to have solved the problem – no more warning lights and the traction control is back to normal. Your suggestion about the ABS control unit being the culprit was spot on!
