The battery is about 4 years old. Could a slightly older battery really cause all these problems?

Yes, a heavily discharged or defective battery can cause those exact symptoms on a start-stop system. I'd suggest getting it checked professionally.

Thanks, I will do that. Took it to the shop, they said the battery was defective and replaced it. Cost me 290€ but it fixed the issue!
