Arkana Overheating Issue

I've got a 2021 Renault Arkana hybrid with about 154k km on the clock. Recently, the engine's been overheating, and the check engine light keeps popping on. I've noticed it seems to happen more when I'm stuck in traffic, suggesting the radiator fan isn't kicking in properly. I've checked the coolant level, and it's fine. Also, there's no weird fan noise – it's either full blast or silent. Could a faulty speed sensor be the culprit?

Summary of the thread

A 2021 Renault Arkana hybrid was experiencing engine overheating, particularly in traffic, with the check engine light activating. The issue seemed related to the radiator fan not functioning properly, as it was either on full blast or silent. The coolant level was checked and found to be adequate. A faulty speed sensor was suspected as a potential cause. After further investigation and advice to check the fan relay and fuse, the vehicle was taken to a workshop where the speed sensor was confirmed as the issue and subsequently replaced, resolving the overheating problem.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Whoa, overheating is never good! It kinda sounds like the speed sensor is messing with the fan's ability to regulate temperature. Have you tried checking the fan relay and fuse? Sometimes, it's just a simple electrical issue. Is the fan spinning freely if you try to turn it by hand (when the engine is off and cool, of course!)?

Good shout on the relay and fuse – I'll check those. Didn't think of that! As for spinning the fan by hand, I haven't tried that yet. But if the fan does spin freely, what does that tell me? I'm trying to work out if it might be the sensor, but I'm not entirely sure where to even start looking for that, or test it.

If the fan spins freely, it suggests the motor itself isn't seized, and the issue is more likely electrical – relay, fuse, wiring, or, yeah, the speed sensor. The speed sensor’s tricky without the right tools. Given the overheating, and the potential to seriously damage your engine, I'd bite the bullet and get it to a workshop. Hopefully they can pinpoint it quickly!

Thanks for the advice! Took it to the shop like you said. Turns out it was the speed sensor. 250€ later, and all is well. Engine's running cool as a cucumber. Appreciate the help!
