Astra's Out of Nowhere Shutdowns: Engine Light Mystery Solved?

Hi all, having issues with my 2022 Vauxhall Astra. Engine light is on and the car shuts off out of nowhere while driving. Sometimes it won't start at all. Diagnostic shows a stored fault and I suspect it might be related to incorrect coding. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Interested to hear what was the actual fix and which workshop managed to solve it. Any input appreciated!

Hey there! I have some experience with cars and had a very similar issue with my 2020 Vauxhall Corsa last year. The symptoms were exactly the same, engine light, unusual shutdowns, and starting problems. Turned out it was a faulty third-party chip tuning that messed up the ECU coding. Took it to Vauxhall's certified workshop in my area, they had to reset and reprogram the ECU. Cost me around 180€ but totally worth it, no issues since then. What's your car's mileage and have you had any recent modifications done? Also, when did these symptoms first start? This info would help me share more relevant details from my experience.

Thanks for sharing that! Yeah, I'm sitting at 242910 KM and had my last service about two months ago. Actually, now that you mention chip tuning, I did get some performance tweaks done at a local shop just before these issues started. Sounds like I might be dealing with something similar to what you experienced. Did the workshop need to keep your car for long to fix it? Just trying to figure out if I should plan for alternative transport.

Hey again! Yeah, your situation sounds exactly like what I went through. When I had my Corsa fixed, they actually kept it for about a day and a half. I remember being pretty anxious about it, but they needed the extra time to properly diagnose and reset everything. The performance tweaks you mentioned definitely ring a bell, that's exactly what caused my issues too. Just so you know, in my case, they had to completely remove the third-party tuning and restore factory settings. Bit gutting since I paid for those tweaks, but honestly, it was worth it to get the car running properly again. One thing I didn't mention before, after they fixed mine, they recommended waiting at least a week before doing any new modifications. I'd suggest the same to you. Also, make sure to keep the documentation from the workshop, I needed mine when dealing with insurance stuff later. If you want my honest opinion, I'd definitely plan for alternative transport for at least two days. Better safe than sorry, right? Let me know how it goes, curious to hear if your fix is as straightforward as mine was!

Thanks for all this info! Really helpful to know about the timeline, I'll definitely arrange some backup transport for a couple of days then. Bit gutted about potentially losing the performance tweaks, but like you said, better to have a properly running car! I'll give the local workshop a call tomorrow morning and see if they can fit me in. I've got all the paperwork from the tuning shop too, so that should help with explaining what's been done. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience, it's made me feel a lot more confident about what needs to be done. I'll update here once it's sorted in case anyone else runs into similar issues! Cheers!
