Astra Crankshaft Sensor Issue

My 2008 Vauxhall Astra (gasoline engine) has the check engine light on and seriously reduced engine power, especially when accelerating. It's like it's gasping for air, and fuel consumption is up. It's only done 31137 km. A reader shows a 'Crankshaft to Camshaft Reference Value' error. Could the crank sensor be failing? Thoughts?

I had similar issues with my old Peugeot, though it was a diesel. Same symptoms: check engine light, sluggish response, drinking fuel like mad. The error code was different but related to timing. Have you checked the wiring to the cam sensor? It might be a loose connection or corroded wire. Or maybe the timing chain has stretched.

Wiring to the cam sensor seems okay on visual inspection - no obvious breaks or corrosion. I haven't checked the timing chain but, given the low mileage, I would have expected that to last longer. Did you ever find out what the problem was on your Peugeot in the end?

Yeah, it turned out to be a faulty crankshaft sensor. Replaced it, and all the problems vanished. Given your error code and symptoms, that crank sensor is looking increasingly suspicious. Unfortunately, it's a fiddly job without the right tools. Unless you're really confident, I'd get it to a local garage to get it checked over.

Thanks for the info! I appreciate you sharing your experience. Took it to a local garage, and you were spot on. Crankshaft sensor was indeed the culprit. New sensor fitted, and the car is running like a dream again. Cost me 340€ all in.
