Astra diesel VANOS solenoid issue

I'm experiencing an issue with my 2005 Vauxhall Astra diesel, currently at 190255 km. The check engine light is on, and fuel consumption has increased. Diagnostics suggest faulty inlet VANOS mechanics. I suspect a defect in one of the camshaft solenoid valves or a power supply issue. Has anyone else encountered something similar?

I also have an Astra with a diesel engine, and your symptoms sound very familiar. A faulty VANOS solenoid is a common issue. Did you notice any engine misfires or rough idling?

No engine misfires or rough idling, thankfully. Just the check engine light and the increased fuel consumption. Are you saying that replacing the VANOS solenoid valve sorted out the check engine light and mileage for you?

Yes, replacing the VANOS solenoid fixed it for me. However, given that you have a check engine light, I would recommend getting a proper diagnostic check at a workshop to confirm. Could also be timing chain-related.

Thanks for confirming. I appreciate the input. I took it to the workshop; the VANOS solenoid was indeed faulty. Replacing it cost me around 250€ and seems to have resolved the issue. Fuel consumption is back to normal, and the check engine light is off.
