I have an Astra too. Sounds like what happened to mine a while back. Is it making any grinding noises, especially when you accelerate?

Yes, distinct grinding during acceleration, correlating with the gear slippage. Can you elaborate on your experience, specifically regarding the correlation between the gear grinding and the transfer case oil wear?

Yep, grinding under acceleration. Pretty sure it's the same thing. I'd get it checked out by a workshop. They'll probably tell you it's gear wear in the transfer case.
