Audi A1 Hands-Free System Fails, Mic Issues Suspected

Having issues with my 2017 Audi A1 hands-free system. The sound quality during calls has completely dropped and the phone connection no longer works. Error codes are present in the system memory. I suspect the microphone might be faulty since audio input seems non-existent during call attempts. Has anyone dealt with a similar issue? Would really appreciate hearing about repair experiences and what the actual problem turned out to be. Most interested in knowing if it was a simple microphone repair or something more complex in the audio system. Also wondering about typical repair costs at workshops for this kind of problem.

With moderate experience working on Audi infotainment systems, I encountered a very similar issue on my 2015 Audi A3. The Bluetooth issue started with poor sound quality during calls, followed by complete connection failure. After multiple troubleshooting attempts, including system resets and software updates, the workshop diagnosed a defective main control unit in the infotainment system. The ambient noise cancellation module was also malfunctioning, which explained the audio input problems and degraded speech recognition. The repair required replacing the complete MMI control unit, as individual components could not be serviced separately. Total cost came to 815 Euro, including programming and testing. Before suggesting specific solutions, it would help to know: Have you performed any system resets? Are there specific error codes showing? Does the system recognize your phone but fail to connect, or not detect it at all? Does the regular audio system (radio, media) work normally? These details would help determine if you are facing the same core issue or if it might be something simpler like a faulty microphone, which would be a less expensive fix.

Just had my service done at 134751 KM and wanted to share that after extensive testing, our issues were quite different. The voice recognition and microphone repair in my case were much simpler fixes. The audio input problems stemmed from a loose connection in the overhead console where the mic is mounted. After cleaning the contacts and properly securing the connector, both the volume control and Bluetooth issue were resolved. The repair cost was significantly lower at 180 Euro, mostly labor charges for diagnosis and reconnection work. Your case with the complete MMI replacement definitely sounds more severe than what I experienced. Would still recommend having the error codes properly scanned to rule out any deeper system faults, but based on the symptoms you described, it might be worth checking the simpler fixes first.

Thanks for sharing your repair experience with the A1. My A3 situation was indeed more complex and costly, but your feedback about checking simpler solutions first is spot on. The voice recognition and audio input problems can definitely stem from basic connection issues. The overhead console wiring on these models can work loose over time due to vibration and temperature changes. Proper sound quality often depends on clean, secure connections. My MMI replacement might have been avoidable if we had identified similar connection problems early on. The speech recognition deteriorated gradually, which masked the root cause. The ambient noise cancellation issues I experienced could also have been related to loose connections rather than actual hardware failure. For future reference to others: before assuming the worst with complete MMI failures, checking microphone connections and cleaning contact points should be the first troubleshooting steps. This 180 Euro repair versus my 815 Euro replacement shows the value of thorough initial diagnosis.

Thank you both for the detailed insights. After getting my car back and seeing how the audio system now works perfectly, I really appreciate the suggestion to check simple fixes first. The wireless connection is stable now and all functions are back to normal. The volume control and voice recognition work great after that basic repair to the microphone wiring. Looking back, the audio input problems and error codes had me worried about a much more expensive fix, so I am relieved it turned out to be just loose connections. For anyone facing similar issues, get those error codes checked but do not assume you need a complete system replacement right away. The ambient noise cancellation and other features may work fine once basic connection problems are addressed. My 180 Euro repair definitely beats spending 815 Euro on a new MMI unit. Best decision was having them properly diagnose the issue rather than jumping to replace major components. Now I know to check those overhead console connections first if any audio issues pop up again in the future.
