Audi A3 Diesel Engine Misfires & Power Loss Symptoms

My 2021 Audi A3 Diesel (7731 KM) is giving me serious trouble lately. The engine keeps misfiring and jerking during acceleration, plus I'm getting reduced power and rough idling. Also noticed a strong exhaust smell. The check engine light is on and error codes are stored. After a bad experience with my last mechanic, I want to make sure before going back, does this sound like a defective intake manifold to anyone? Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms and what was your repair experience? Mainly concerned about getting ripped off again.

Had similar symptoms with a 2018 Audi A4 diesel. The engine misfire and jerking during acceleration turned out to be a significant intake manifold issue. The gasket leak was causing air to enter the system incorrectly, leading to poor engine performance and that distinctive exhaust smell. The repair required complete manifold replacement due to heat-related warping and scorching of the original part. This was indeed a serious issue that needed immediate attention, as continued driving could have led to further engine damage. The symptoms match exactly: rough idling, power loss, and engine misfires are classic signs of air intake problems. The scorching on the manifold was visible once removed, showing how the improper air-fuel mixture had affected the component. A manifold replacement is a complex job requiring specialized diagnostic equipment and proper torque specifications. The check engine light and error codes typically point to air measurement inconsistencies, which aligns with a manifold problem. For an A3 of that age with low mileage, this issue would be covered under warranty. Worth checking warranty status before proceeding with repairs.

Thanks for sharing your A4 experience, it really helps since it matches my A3 symptoms. Your description of the gasket leak and manifold pressure issues gives me confidence about what to look for. Definitely hearing that vacuum leak when the engine is running, just like you described. Did you remember roughly what the repair cost was in your case? Also curious if youve had any related issues pop up since the manifold replacement?

After getting the intake manifold fixed due to the severe scorching damage, the total repair came to 1180 Euro. The gasket leak and associated vacuum leak symptoms completely disappeared after the replacement. Have been driving for over a year now without any engine misfire issues or manifold pressure problems. The investment was worth it since continuing to drive with a faulty air intake system could have caused more extensive engine damage. The manifold replacement resolved all the symptoms, no more jerking, rough idling, or that troublesome exhaust smell that was so concerning initially. Most importantly, the engine now maintains proper manifold pressure and smooth operation. Regular maintenance checks show no signs of recurring issues, confirming the repair was done correctly the first time.

I decided to take it to a certified shop last week after reading about these manifold issues. The mechanic confirmed the vacuum leak right away when testing the manifold pressure. They found significant scorching on the intake manifold, exactly matching what you described. The repair cost came to 1250 Euro including parts and labor. While not cheap, the dealership validated it would be covered under my warranty since the car is still fairly new. The entire job took about 6 hours. Been driving it for a few days now and the engine misfire and jerking are completely gone. No more check engine light or rough idling. The exhaust smell has disappeared too. Really glad I got this fixed before it led to bigger problems. Thanks again for helping me identify the issue, saved me from another frustrating mechanic experience.
