Audi A4 B5 Avant check engine light comes on

Hi folks, I have a problem with my Audi A4 (built in 2001, gasoline engine) that is really worrying me. When accelerating, there's black smoke coming out of the exhaust, the check engine light is on, plus loss of engine power, uneven engine running, jerking when accelerating and the fuel consumption is also higher than usual. I think it could be a defect in the lambda sensor heater, but I'm not sure. Have you had similar experiences and can you tell me how your garage solved the problem and what they found? Would be grateful for any tips!

Hello, I had a similar problem with my Audi A3 (built in 2000). I'm not exactly a mechanic, but I do know a bit about cars. My mechanic was only able to diagnose the car accurately after a few tests. It turned out that the engine control unit was faulty, which is why the car wasn't running properly and had all the symptoms you describe. The repair cost a good 1000 euros, but since then the car has run like clockwork. I would recommend looking at it with a scanner to make sure it's the same problem. Can you give me more info on your car? Engine size, mileage and so on? Then I might be able to help a bit more.

Hi, thanks for your answer. My A4 has a 2.0L engine and the speedometer shows 112345 km. So not exactly low, but it has always run reliably so far. I'll definitely give the scanner tip a try, maybe that will clarify things a bit more. Did you read out the error yourself or did you have it done by your garage?

Hey, no problem! I actually took the car to my garage to have it read out. They then read out the engine control unit and were able to find the fault. With your mileage and engine size, it could actually be something similar, my car wasn't far off the mark back then either. If it really is the control unit, you'll unfortunately have to expect some costs. But hey, better you know now and can take action than if the engine completely gives up the ghost, right?

Hey thanks for the advice! To be honest, I was a bit hopeful that there was a cheaper solution, but I definitely don't want to risk the engine breaking down completely. So I'll take the car to the garage for a readout and hope that there won't be any nasty surprises. Thanks again for your help, really cool of you!
