Audi A6 Fuel Sensor Issues Causing Idle Stalls

Thanks for sharing your experience. Seems your faulty sensor issue was very similar to mine. I was dealing with exactly the same stalling problems at idle and inconsistent fuel tank readings. Would you remember roughly how much you paid for the complete repair? Just trying to get an idea of costs before I book it in. Did the car dashboard warning lights clear up right after the fix? Also curious if youve had any other fuel system problems since getting it sorted? Mine has been running rough lately even after warming up.

Had the car checked by my mechanic last week and got the fuel level sensor issue fully resolved. The problematic readings on the car dashboard cleared immediately after fixing a blown fuse in the fuel system circuit, a much simpler fix than expected. Total cost was 52 Euro for parts and labor. The stalling problems and inconsistent fuel gauge readings are completely gone now. The engine runs smoothly at idle and the fuel level shows accurate readings. No other fuel system issues have cropped up since the repair. Your rough running might point to a different problem though, especially if it persists after warm-up. Worth getting the car electronics checked, as there could be other sensors causing trouble beyond just the fuel tank components. Hope you get yours sorted without too much hassle or expense. These fuel system problems can be tricky to diagnose but are usually fixable without major costs if caught early.

After getting your input, I finally had the car checked last week. The mechanic found that the faulty sensor was causing multiple issues. The repair involved replacing the entire fuel level sensor unit plus some damaged wiring. Total repair cost came to 580 Euro, more than expected but worth it to fix the problems properly. The check engine light disappeared right after the repair and the fuel gauge now shows correct readings. The stalling issue is completely resolved and the engine runs perfectly at idle. Really glad I got it sorted before it could cause any damage to the fuel pump. The mechanic mentioned these sensor faults are pretty common on these models after 80000 km. At least now I know what to watch out for in the future. Thanks again for the helpful advice, saved me from potentially bigger problems down the line.

I experienced similar symptoms with my 2012 Audi A4 2.0 TDI. The fuel gauge readings were inconsistent and the engine would stall, particularly at idle. The check engine light pointed to a sensor fault in the fuel system. After diagnosis, it turned out the fuel level sensor was failing, causing incorrect readings and affecting the fuel pump operation. The repair involved: 1. Full fuel system diagnostic scan 2. Removing the fuel tank sender unit 3. Replacing the complete fuel level sensor assembly 4. Recalibrating the new sensor 5. Clearing fault codes This was a moderate to serious repair since it required dropping the fuel tank. The faulty sensor was causing the fuel pump to run irregularly, which explained the stalling. The job took about 4 hours to complete. Key things to check first: Fuse box for any blown fuses related to fuel system, Wiring connections to the sensor, Fuel pump operation when turning key to ON position, Full tank vs actual gauge reading These sensor issues are common in VAG diesel engines from that era. Getting it fixed properly is important as it can lead to fuel pump damage if left unattended.
