Audi A7 TDI Oil Pressure Warning + Strange Engine Noise

My A7 3.0 TDI from 2015 (101k km) started making concerning engine noises today and the oil pressure warning light came on. Already had bad experiences with mechanics in the past, so hoping someone here dealt with similar symptoms. Could it be a failing oil pressure sensor or something more serious like oil pump failure? Car currently has good oil levels and was serviced 5000 km ago. Anyone faced this before and can share their repair experience?

Summary of the thread

An Audi A7 TDI owner reported concerning engine noises and an oil pressure warning light. The potential causes discussed include a failing oil pressure sensor or a more serious issue like oil pump failure. Another owner shared a similar experience with an A6 TDI, where a failing oil pump led to inconsistent oil pressure and engine noise, requiring immediate repair to prevent severe engine damage. The suggested solution involves replacing the oil pump, cleaning oil passages, and ensuring proper oil levels to resolve the issue and prevent future problems.

Had similar issues with my A6 3.0 TDI from 2012. The oil pressure warning combined with engine noise pointed to a failing oil pump in my case. This is a serious issue that needs immediate attention since insufficient oil pressure can cause catastrophic engine damage. When my oil pressure sensor warning appeared, I first verified it wasnt just a faulty sensor, the accompanying engine noise confirmed it was the pump. The oil pump showed signs of wear at the drive gear, causing inconsistent oil pressure. This explained both the warning light and engine noise. The repair required removing the oil pan and replacing the complete oil pump assembly. The job also included cleaning the oil passages to remove any metal debris from the failing pump and installing a new oil filter since debris often clogs it during pump failure. This isnt a job that can wait, driving with low oil pressure risks severe engine damage. If experiencing these symptoms, the car should not be driven except to get to a repair shop. Oil leakage wasnt present in my case, but internal pressure loss was confirmed through diagnostic testing. These oil pump failures often occur when high-pressure fuel pumps wear out on TDI engines, as they share the same drive system. Worth having both checked when experiencing these symptoms.

Thanks for sharing your A6 experience. My A7 showed the exact same symptoms last month, engine noise getting louder with low oil pressure warnings. Turned out the engine bearings were severely worn due to inconsistent oil pressure from a failing pump. Quick question, do you recall the total repair cost for your oil pump replacement? My bill was quite steep since they had to replace additional components they found damaged during the repair. Also, have you experienced any other issues since getting it fixed? Just wondering if I should watch out for anything specific in the coming months with these oil pressure problems sometimes being connected to other issues.

After fixing the oil pump failure on my A6, I paid 755 Euro for the complete repair including parts and labor. The price was reasonable considering the complexity of accessing and replacing the oil pump assembly. The low oil pressure issue was completely resolved after the repair. The engine runs smooth now without any warning lights or concerning noises. Its been running perfectly for the past year with consistent oil pressure readings. Regular oil changes and monitoring engine oil levels have helped prevent any related problems. The mechanic did a thorough job cleaning the oil passages and checking for potential damage to engine bearings during the repair. No other components needed replacement in my case, which kept the costs lower than repairs requiring additional parts. For peace of mind, pay extra attention to any unusual engine noises or oil pressure fluctuations during the first few thousand kilometers after the repair. But if the job was done properly, addressing the failing pump should have fixed the root cause of the low oil pressure problems.

Thanks for the feedback. After reading about similar experiences, I took my A7 to a certified shop last week. The diagnosis confirmed what I suspected, a failing oil pump causing dangerously low oil pressure. The repair took 3 days since they found metal particles from the worn pump had clogged the oil filter and damaged some engine bearings. Total bill came to 1250 Euro including parts and labor. More than I hoped but less than risking complete engine failure. The engine now runs perfectly smooth with no warning lights. The mechanic showed me the old pump which had significant wear on the drive gear. They also cleaned all oil passages and installed fresh oil with proper viscosity to prevent future issues. Lesson learned, dont ignore oil pressure warnings even briefly. Could have saved money catching it earlier before it damaged other components. At least now I know what to watch for in the future.
