Audi A8 DPF Failure: Black Smoke + Power Loss Alert

Just had some concerning symptoms with my 2015 Audi A8 diesel (26272 KM). The engine warning light came on alongside reduced power, plus there is dark smoke and strong smell from the exhaust. My mechanic wasnt very helpful last time, but I suspect DPF issues, possibly related to low pressure in the exhaust system. The pressure sensor might be faulty, or there could be bigger problems with the emission control system. Has anyone experienced similar symptoms with their A8? Looking for advice on what to check and recommendations for getting it properly diagnosed, as I dont want to waste money on incorrect repairs again.

Had similar problems with my 2012 Audi A6 3.0 TDI. The symptoms match exactly what I experienced, reduced power mode, dark smoke, and emission control system warnings. The exhaust back pressure sensor was indeed defective, but this was just the symptom of a more serious underlying issue. The DPF was completely clogged due to multiple failed regeneration attempts caused by the faulty sensor readings. Since the sensor was not correctly measuring exhaust pressure, the engine control unit could not properly manage the DPF regeneration cycles. The repair required: Diagnostic testing of the complete emission control system, Replacement of exhaust back pressure sensor, Full DPF cleaning, Reset of all engine management systems This is not a problem to ignore, as continued driving with these symptoms can lead to complete DPF failure. The reduced power mode is actually a protection mechanism to prevent engine damage from excessive back pressure in the exhaust system. Recommend getting a proper diagnostic test from a workshop specializing in diesel engine management systems. They should check both the sensor readings and physical condition of the DPF.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the A6. My A8 was showing those exact same symptoms a few months ago. After that terrible exhaust smell and black smoke episodes, I finally got it checked at a different shop that specializes in diesel particulate filter repairs. The particulate filter needed a thorough cleaning and they also found issues with the exhaust system sensors. Cannot stress enough how important it is to address these DPF issues quickly before they cause more extensive damage to the emission control system. How much did you end up paying for your repairs? Also curious if youve had any similar problems since getting it fixed? Been about 4 months since my repair and so far everything seems to be running smoothly with no warning lights.

Thanks for asking about the repair costs and follow-up experience. After getting my A6 fixed by replacing the exhaust back pressure sensor for 245 Euro, everything has been running perfectly. No more reduced power warnings or DPF issues since the repair. The most important thing was catching the particulate filter problem early. The faulty pressure sensor was causing incorrect readings, which prevented proper DPF regeneration cycles. Once the new sensor was installed, the exhaust system started working as designed. Its really encouraging to hear your A8 is also running well after 4 months. These pressure sensor problems can definitely be frustrating, but when properly diagnosed and fixed, they typically dont return. Just keep an eye on exhaust smoke and any warning lights, early detection of low pressure issues helps avoid more expensive repairs down the line. The repair cost I paid was actually quite reasonable compared to what a complete DPF replacement would have been. Regular highway driving also helps maintain proper particulate filter function now that the sensor is working correctly.

I finally found a proper solution for my A8. After getting tired of my regular mechanic dismissing the symptoms, I took it to a diesel specialist workshop. The diagnostic testing showed exactly what was suspected, problems with the exhaust system and DPF. The total repair came to 890 Euro, covering sensor replacement, DPF cleaning, and a full system reset. The pressure sensor was completely shot, which explained the reduced power mode and those awful smoke issues. The technician showed me how the faulty sensor was preventing proper emission control system function. Best decision was not waiting longer to get it fixed. Four months later, the engine runs perfectly, no warning lights, and the exhaust is clean. The new shop did a thorough job explaining the repairs and showing me the faulty parts. Really glad I switched mechanics and got a proper diagnosis. Would have ended up with much costlier repairs if I had kept driving with a clogged DPF and bad sensors.
