Thanks for the detailed response on that transmission control module issue. Glad to hear the transmission sensor problems were electronic rather than mechanical. The gear linkage symptoms on my A8 sound identical. Did you remember roughly what the final repair cost was for replacing the control unit? Also curious if youve had any other transmission failure issues since getting it fixed? Mine has been at the shop for 4 days now and Im trying to budget for worst case. Looking to avoid any long-term problems, especially with the shift lock system thats giving me trouble. Appreciate any follow up insights.

Since having the defective control unit replaced, my automatic transmission has worked flawlessly for the past 18 months. The parking position and shift lock issues were completely resolved after the repair. The total cost came to 1000 Euro for replacing and programming the affected control unit. While not cheap, it was worth fixing properly to avoid potential transmission failure down the road. The 4-day shop time sounds normal, they need time to fully test the transmission operation after installing the new unit. Based on my experience, once the electronic control system is properly repaired, you shouldnt face any recurring transmission issues. The original problems with gear recognition and parking position engagement were entirely due to the faulty control module. Regular transmission maintenance should prevent any future complications. The transmission repair specialist explained that these control units rarely fail twice if replaced with genuine parts. Just make sure they perform a full system calibration after installation.

Thanks everyone for the replies. Just wanted to share how my repair went. After taking it to a certified transmission repair shop, they confirmed it was indeed the control module causing the gear shifter problems. The mechanic found the neutral position sensor was also damaged, which explained why the transmission had trouble detecting gear changes. They replaced both parts and recalibrated the entire system. The repair took 5 days total and cost 1200 Euro. A bit more than expected but still better than a full transmission replacement. The gear linkage and shift lock are now working perfectly. No more issues starting the car or engaging park. They also did a transmission fluid change while it was in, just to be safe. Three weeks later and everything is still running smoothly. The check engine light hasnt come back on and the automatic transmission shifts like new. Really glad I got it properly diagnosed rather than trying quick fixes. Worth every euro to have it done right by transmission specialists.

Had the same transmission failure symptoms on my 2013 A6 3.0TFSI. The main issue was the gear shifter control module that coordinates between transmission and park brake systems. The automatic transmission would not properly recognize gear positions, causing erratic behavior when shifting from Park. The check engine light came on because the transmission control unit lost communication with other systems. In my case, the affected control unit was completely defective and required full replacement along with recalibration of the transmission management system. This was definitely a serious repair that kept the car at the shop for several days. The symptoms match exactly, no proper gear shifter engagement, park brake issues, and starting problems. These high-end cars have complex transmission control systems where electrical faults can mimic mechanical problems. Recommend having a certified transmission repair specialist diagnose it properly. They need specialized diagnostic tools to properly test the control module communication. This is not something a general mechanic can typically fix without dealer-level equipment. The transmission itself was fine in my case, it was purely an electronic control issue. But leaving it unfixed risks damage to the automatic transmission from improper gear engagement.
