Audi Q5 MAF Sensor Causing Stalls and Black Smoke

Looking for advice with potential mass air flow sensor failure on my 2014 Q5 (gas, 135883 KM). Engine stalls when idle and fuel consumption shot up recently. Getting black smoke on acceleration and check engine light is on. Had some sketchy experiences with mechanics before, so wanting to hear if anyone dealt with similar air intake issues and where they got it fixed properly? Really just want to confirm if these symptoms match MAF problems before taking it in.

Having experienced similar symptoms on my 2011 Audi A4 2.0T, these signs strongly point to MAF sensor issues. The black smoke, increased fuel consumption, and stalling at idle are classic indicators of an incorrect air-fuel ratio caused by a faulty MAF sensor. When my MAF sensor failed, the engine performance decline was quite noticeable. The check engine light came on, and the car would stumble during acceleration. After diagnosis, it turned out the sensor was giving incorrect readings, causing the engine computer to mix fuel inappropriately. This is a serious issue that needs prompt attention, as continued driving with incorrect air-fuel mixtures can damage other engine components. The repair itself is straightforward, the MAF sensor is typically accessible near the air intake housing. In my case, they first cleaned the sensor to rule out contamination before replacing the unit. Consider getting the trouble codes read before repair. A proper diagnostic scan will confirm if its truly the MAF sensor rather than another air intake component causing similar symptoms. The repair should include cleaning the entire air intake path to prevent future sensor contamination.

Thanks for confirming the MAF sensor issue. That really helps with my Q5 situation. Just curious, what was your final repair cost for the MAF sensor replacement? Also, has anything else gone wrong with the air intake system since getting it fixed? My air filter was replaced during routine maintenance last year, but wondering if I should have them check that too while they are in there.

Thanks for asking about the follow-up. The MAF sensor replacement on my A4 cost 365 Euro total, including labor and parts. The repair completely resolved the performance decline and sensor failure issues. The stalling and black smoke problems disappeared immediately after the fix. Since the repair, the air intake system has been running perfectly with no further complications. While your air filter replacement last year is relatively recent, having them inspect it during the MAF sensor work is smart preventive maintenance. A clogged air filter can impact the new sensor readings and affect fuel economy. My check engine light hasnt returned, and fuel consumption is back to normal levels. The investment was worth it to restore proper engine function and prevent potential long-term damage from incorrect fuel mixture.

Thanks for the input. I bit the bullet and took it to a reputable import shop. The diagnostic confirmed the MAF sensor failure, exactly what was suggested here. Total bill came to 410 Euro including parts and labor. They also checked the air intake system and air filter while they were at it. The engine stalling is completely gone now and it runs like new again. No more black smoke on acceleration either. Fuel consumption has dropped back to normal levels. The mechanic was thorough and showed me the old sensor, it was pretty contaminated. The whole repair took about 2 hours. They cleaned out the entire air intake path as preventive maintenance. Really glad I got this fixed before it could cause more serious engine problems. The performance decline was getting scary, especially with the unusual stalling.
