Audi Q7 Transmission Failure with Dead Gear Display

Having serious trouble with my 2015 Audi Q7 (gas engine, 24221 KM). The car dashboard is acting up, the gear selection display is completely dead and I am experiencing major transmission issues. The automatic transmission wont engage properly and makes grinding noises when shifting. Getting error codes too. Had a bad experience with my last mechanic and wondering if anyone else faced similar symptoms, especially with the shift knob and sensor problems? Looking for recommendations on what might be causing this and approximate repair costs before I take it to another shop.

Had nearly identical problems on my 2012 Audi Q5 2.0T. The instrument panel malfunctioned first, specifically the gear indicator display went completely dark. Soon after, the transmission started showing symptoms, harsh shifts and grinding sounds. The root cause was a failed transmission control module (TCM). This is a critical automotive electronics component that manages the communication between your gear selector and transmission. When the TCM fails, it causes both display issues and mechanical shifting problems simultaneously. The repair required: Complete TCM replacement, Reprogramming of the new control unit, Transmission adaptation procedure, Full system diagnostic scan This is considered a serious repair as the transmission control module is integral to proper vehicle operation. The shift knob sensors and gear indicator problems are typically symptoms rather than the core issue. Would strongly recommend having this diagnosed at a shop specializing in Audi transmission work. The combination of electrical issues and mechanical symptoms points clearly to a TCM failure based on the typical failure pattern seen in this model range. Before replacing the TCM, they should verify the wiring harness condition and check for any voltage issues that could have damaged the original unit.

Thanks for your detailed insight on the TCM issue. This matches what I experienced with my Q7. The electronic display problems and transmission symptoms were exactly as you described. My gear shift also had the same grinding noise. The technician confirmed the transmission control module failure after running diagnostics. Did you remember the total cost for your repair? Just wondering if prices have changed much since then. Also curious if you had any other problems pop up with the car dashboard or gear indicator after getting it fixed?

Had the repair done last month actually. The digital display and gear selector are both working perfectly now, no more instrument panel glitches or transmission problems since the fix. The total bill came to 1000 Euro for replacing the affected control unit. The sensor problem was completely resolved after they installed and programmed the new TCM. The car dashboard is back to normal operation and the transmission shifts smoothly again. The gear shift indicator display shows the correct position every time now. Its worth mentioning that getting this fixed by a qualified technician is crucial since the control unit needs proper programming to communicate with other vehicle systems. The investment was worth it to have everything working correctly again without those concerning grinding noises or faulty readouts on the instrument panel.

Finally took my Q7 to a certified Audi shop last week. The diagnostic confirmed what you mentioned, a faulty transmission control module was causing both the gear selector issues and instrument panel problems. The repair process took 2 days since they had to order the TCM and complete extensive testing. Total cost came to 1200 Euro including parts, labor and programming. While higher than expected, the automotive electronics specialist explained the complexity of replacing and properly configuring the control unit. Happy to report the sensor problem is completely resolved. The gear indicator works perfectly now and the grinding noise is gone. The transmission shifts smoothly and all error codes have cleared from the system. No dashboard issues since the repair. Really glad I asked here first, helped me understand the likely cause and typical repair costs before visiting the shop. Having that knowledge made me more confident when discussing the problems with the technician.
