Audi RS4 ABS & Traction Fault: Bad Lateral Sensor Alert

Running into issues with my 2005 Audi RS4 (128402km, gas engine). ABS warning light stays on and traction control is not working properly. Got a diagnostic scan showing a lateral acceleration sensor fault. Looking for advice from anyone who had similar problems, what was the actual issue and repair cost? Want to be prepared before heading to the mechanic this time. Electronic stability system seems compromised. Anyone dealt with this before?

Had the same fault on my 2008 Audi S4 last winter. The diagnostic scan revealed the lateral acceleration sensor was sending incorrect data to the control unit, affecting multiple safety systems. The issue caused the traction control and ABS to malfunction, similar to your symptoms. The steering angle sensor readings were also inconsistent, which compromised the entire electronic stability system. After thorough testing, the mechanic found moisture had damaged the control unit itself. The repair required replacing the complete control unit module, not just the sensor. This is a serious safety concern since it affects core stability systems. The job took about 4 hours at the shop including programming and wheel alignment to properly calibrate the new unit. Important note: Driving with compromised ABS and traction control puts you at higher risk, especially in challenging conditions. Would recommend getting this fixed soon, as the safety warning lights indicate critical systems are not functioning properly. Now the car works perfectly, no warning lights, restored traction control, and proper electronic stability management.

Thanks for the detailed response about the control unit replacement. Dealing with similar issues on my RS4 right now and your experience helps a lot. The yaw rate sensor behavior matches exactly what I am seeing. How much did the complete repair end up costing? Just want to get a sense of what to expect at the shop. Also curious if you had any related issues pop up since getting it fixed? The traction control system in these cars is quite complex and I would rather get it done right the first time. Currently limiting my driving since the safety warning lights make me nervous about compromised stability control.

Thanks for asking about the final costs. After taking it to the mechanic, replacing the affected control unit resolved all the issues, including the lateral sensor fault. The total repair came to 1000 Euro, which covered parts, labor, and the necessary programming. Since fixing it 8 months ago, all safety systems have worked flawlessly. The traction control performs exactly as designed, and no warning lights have returned. The wheel alignment done during installation ensures everything works in perfect sync. Smart move limiting your driving while the stability control is compromised. The safety warning lights indicate serious system issues that could affect vehicle control. Getting it fixed was worth every euro for the peace of mind knowing all stability systems are functioning properly. The repair fully restored the electronic stability system, and the steering angle calibration is spot on. No related problems have emerged since the fix, it was a complete solution to all the fault codes.

I took my RS4 to the mechanic yesterday after getting great advice here. The diagnostic scan confirmed exactly what was discussed, a faulty control unit affecting multiple systems. The electronic stability warning lights were spot on in indicating the issue. The repair took about 5 hours total. They replaced the control unit, performed a complete system calibration, and adjusted the steering angle sensors. The vehicle stability system is now working perfectly, no more warning lights and the traction control is back to normal. Final cost came to 1150 Euro including parts, labor and programming. While not cheap, it was worth it to restore proper safety system function. The mechanic showed me the old unit which had clear signs of moisture damage, just like the previous poster mentioned. First drive after the repair felt completely different, the car is stable and all electronic control systems are responding properly. Really glad I got this fixed rather than continuing to drive with compromised safety systems.
