Thanks for sharing your experience with the power tailgate repair. I had almost identical symptoms with my S5, and the electrical sensor diagnosis pointed to the same issue. Id be curious to know what the final cost was for your repair? Mine ended up being quite expensive due to the harness replacement, but at least the automatic tailgate has worked perfectly since the fix. Have you encountered any other sensor-related problems after the repair was done?

Glad I could help with sharing my experience. Just got back from the mechanic last week actually, they found and fixed the tailgate hall sensor fault. The repair was much simpler than expected. Unlike my previous assumption about the wiring harness, it turned out to be just a loose sensor wiring connection near the tailgate hinge that needed securing. Total cost came to 95 Euro, which included the electrical sensor diagnosis and fixing the cable connection. Much better than the full harness replacement I initially went through. The automatic tailgate has been working perfectly since the repair. No other sensor-related issues have popped up since the fix. The sensor calibration they performed as part of the repair seems to have resolved all the functionality problems. The complete open/close cycle works smoothly now without any problems. The affordable repair cost really shows how important it is to get an accurate diagnosis. Sometimes what seems like a major sensor wiring problem can turn out to be a simple connection issue.

After getting some great advice here, I finally took my S5 to a specialized Audi shop last week. The mechanic found the exact same hall sensor issue others mentioned. The repair was straightforward, they traced it to a damaged sensor wiring connection where the tailgate meets the body. Total repair came to 280 Euro including: Full diagnostic scan, Labor for accessing the wiring, Sensor calibration after the fix The open tailgate function now works perfectly. The shop also checked the entire system and found no other sensor-related problems. Much better experience than my previous mechanic who quoted nearly triple the price without a proper diagnosis. Really appreciate the input from everyone here, helped me understand the issue and find the right shop for the repair.

Had the same issue with an Audi A5 2005. The automatic tailgate would stop halfway, showing a sensor fault in diagnostics. The hall sensor was indeed the culprit, but the root cause was actually a damaged wiring harness near the tailgate hinge. The repair involved: Complete diagnostic scan, Removal of tailgate trim, Testing the tailgate motor functionality, Replacing the wiring harness, Recalibrating the tailgate system This was a significant repair that took about 4 hours of labor. The vehicle sensor system needed proper recalibration after the fix to ensure correct operation. Its not a DIY job due to the complexity of the automatic tailgate system and the need for specialized diagnostic equipment. The good news is that once fixed, the system has worked flawlessly for over 2 years now. Suggest having this checked soon, as continuing to operate a faulty tailgate motor can lead to more expensive damage. Consider getting a second opinion from a certified shop that specializes in Audi electrical systems. The diagnostic equipment and expertise matter significantly for these sensor-related issues.
