Last service done at 113000 KM, about 2 months ago. The compressor clutch seems to engage when I press the AC button, I can hear it click but nothing happens after that. No unusual noises or visible leaks spotted. Running standard 1.8T engine. Worth noting the AC maintenance history shows refrigerant was last recharged at 95000 KM. A failed AC efficiency test during the recent service might have indicated early signs of this issue, but the system was still cooling fine until yesterday. Based on the info shared, valve failure symptoms seem similar to my case. Getting worried about potential repair costs if multiple components need replacement. Anyone have experience with partial AC system repairs vs complete overhaul?

Thanks for the additional details. After facing similar valve issues with my A4, I understand your concern about repair costs. Based on your description, especially the clicking compressor clutch, this does sound like the valve problem I encountered. The failed AC efficiency test during your service was likely an early warning. When my valves started failing, I also had a period where everything seemed fine before complete failure. The clicking engagement without cooling typically points to either low refrigerant or valve issues affecting pressure regulation. In my case, attempting partial repairs proved costly in the long run. I initially only replaced one valve, but ended up needing a complete system overhaul within 3 months. The temperature control never worked properly until all affected components were replaced. For the 1.8T engine, valve replacement costs are typically lower than what I paid for the A4, usually around 700-800 Euro. A complete system inspection is crucial though, as refrigerant loss through deteriorated seals often contributes to valve failure. Key points from my experience: Choose complete repair over partial fix, Have pressure switch and sensors checked, Request AC diagnostics with dye testing, Ensure proper evacuation and recharge The good news is once properly fixed, the AC system should remain reliable for years with regular maintenance.

Based on your experience and detailed explanation, I think I will proceed with a complete system inspection rather than attempting partial repairs. The clicking compressor clutch matching your symptoms really helps narrow down the likely cause. Just checked my service records again, the AC efficiency test actually showed a 15% performance drop compared to manufacturer specs. The workshop recommended monitoring it but said immediate repair wasnt necessary at that time. Wish I had addressed it then, might have avoided a complete failure. Will schedule an appointment for full AC diagnostics including the valve system, pressure switch testing, and dye test as suggested. While 700-800 Euro is a significant repair cost, it makes more sense than risking multiple partial repairs that could end up being more expensive. Thanks for sharing your repair experience, really helped put things in perspective. Will update once I get the official diagnosis. Only concern now is workshop wait times since AC repairs tend to be in high demand.

Had a similar AC system failure on my 2006 Audi A4 with comparable symptoms. Have moderate experience with AC diagnostics but left the major repairs to professionals. The main issue turned out to be defective valves in the AC system. Initially thought it was a refrigerant leak or pressure switch problem since the symptoms matched, but diagnostic testing revealed faulty expansion valves. The AC relay and blower motor tested fine. The repair involved: Complete system diagnosis, Replacement of multiple valves, Evacuation and recharge of the system, Testing of the temperature control unit Total cost was around 1000 Euro including parts and labor. The workshop needed about 6 hours to complete everything. After the fix, the AC worked perfectly again with proper cooling and consistent temperature control. To provide more specific advice for your TT: What engine variant do you have? Does the AC compressor engage when you press the button? Are you hearing any unusual noises? Have you noticed any refrigerant leaks under the car? These details would help determine if your issue matches what I experienced with the valve system.
