Ignition coil, eh? I've heard of them, but haven't really messed with them before. Where do I find it, and is there anything specific I should be looking for?

On my Astra, the ignition coil was right on top of the engine, pretty easy to spot. You're looking for a small block with wires running to each spark plug. Check the connections – are any loose, corroded, or damaged? If you're not comfortable poking around, it might be best to get it checked out by a workshop. It could save you from causing more damage!

Thanks a bunch for the tip! It WAS the ignition coil, or at least a dodgy connection to it. The workshop diagnosed it quickly and fixed it for 95€. Runs like a dream now!

That sounds frustrating! I had something similar happen with my old Vauxhall Astra, although it was a petrol engine. Rough running, engine hesitation, and the check engine light all pointed to ignition problems. Have you checked the ignition coil? On my Astra, a faulty cable connection to the coil was the culprit. Might be worth a look before replacing expensive parts.
