Avancier engine knocking
Summary of the thread
A 2003 Honda Avancier with 168,000 km was experiencing engine knocking, power loss, jerking during acceleration, and smoke emission. The issue was suspected to be related to bad fuel, but further investigation revealed carbon buildup in the combustion chamber as the cause. A mechanic confirmed the diagnosis and resolved the problem by cleaning the carbon deposits, restoring the vehicle's performance.

Carbon buildup, huh? How would I check that, and is it something I could potentially fix myself, or am I looking at a mechanic visit?

Checking it yourself can be tricky without the right tools. I'd say take it to a trusted mechanic. Carbon deposits can lead to engine knock, which is bad news. They can use a borescope to inspect the cylinders. If it is carbon buildup, they might suggest an engine tuning or cleaning service.

I took it to my mechanic, and you were spot on – it was carbon deposits in the combustion chamber. They cleaned it out, and the knocking is gone! Cost me about 425€, but well worth it to have my Avancier running smoothly again.

Sounds familiar. I had a similar problem with my old Subaru Forester. Different engine, but the symptoms were almost identical. Have you checked for carbon buildup in the combustion chamber? That was the culprit in my case. Detonation can cause knocking.
