Avantime Engine Knocking

My 2003 Renault Avantime with a gasoline engine is giving me grief. It's got 248331 km and I've noticed a distinct knocking sound coming from what I suspect is the combustion chamber. Engine power is down, it jerks like crazy when accelerating, and puffs out smoke when I put my foot down. I checked the error memory and there's a stored error. Any ideas? I'm suspecting deposits in the combustion chamber, but I'm open to suggestions.

Woah, that sounds rough! I had almost the EXACT same symptoms with my Avantime a while back. Knocking, power loss, the works! Did you try checking your cylinder heads? And what about the ignition timing? I remember playing around with fuel octane too, thinking it might be bad gas, but no luck. Engine knock can be a real pain!

Cylinder heads and ignition timing, huh? I hadn't considered those. When you had the issue, was the knocking constant, or only under load? And did you manage to fix it yourself, or did you end up taking it to a shop?

The knocking was mostly noticeable under load, yeah. I tried messing with it myself, figuring it was just some buildup, but I couldn’t sort it out. Honestly, I ended up throwing in the towel and taking it to a workshop. Best decision I made! They ran some tests and sorted it out properly.

Took the Avantime to the shop as you suggested. Turns out, it was indeed deposits in the combustion chamber, just like I suspected. They cleaned everything up, and she's running smooth as butter now. Cost me about 425€, but worth every penny. Thanks for the advice!
