Avantime exhaust back pressure sensor malfunction
Summary of the thread
A 2003 Renault Avantime with a diesel engine is experiencing issues with a malfunctioning exhaust back pressure sensor, indicated by a warning light and smoking during acceleration. The malfunction is suspected to be causing the diesel particulate filter (DPF) to not regenerate properly. Checking the wiring for damage is suggested, but ultimately, visiting a workshop for professional diagnosis and repair is recommended to resolve the issue.

Thanks for the tip! I'll check the wiring. Where exactly is the exhaust back pressure sensor located? Is it easy to access?

On my Saab it was near the DPF, but I am not sure where it is in your Avantime. Honestly, given all the symptoms you describe - especially the regeneration issue - and the fact that you will probably need to remove the old one and install the new one I'd recommend visiting a workshop. I needed to and it eventually cost me 245€ but the peace of mind was worth it!

Thanks a lot for the advice! I checked the wiring and couldn't see anything obvious. I've decided to take it to a local garage. I will post again when I know if this fixes the issue!

Sounds similar to what I had with my old Saab 9-3. The exhaust back pressure sensor, or exhaust gas pressure sensor, measures the pressure in the exhaust system. A defective sensor can cause the ECU (engine control unit) to not correctly manage the fuel injection timing and air-fuel ratio, which will increase vehicle emissions. Did you check the wiring to the sensor to be sure it is not damaged?
