Avantime Gearbox Slippage
Summary of the thread
The 2001 Renault Avantime is experiencing gearbox slippage and unclean shifts at 85,221 kilometers. The suspected causes include transfer case oil wear and defective gears, with significant particulate matter found in the fluid, indicating mechanical wear. Suggestions include checking the oil level and condition, possibly trying a fluid change, but the presence of particulate matter suggests more extensive damage, likely requiring professional workshop intervention.

I did examine the fluid and noticed significant particulate matter, indicative of mechanical wear within the transfer case. The fluid level was also slightly below the recommended mark. Could the wear be accelerated, and would a simple fluid change suffice, or are we potentially looking at more extensive damage?

Okay, particulate matter is a bad sign. If you're seeing that, yeah, a fluid change might only be a temporary band-aid. With those symptoms, it really does sound like those defective gears are the problem. Get thee to a workshop!

I will take it to the workshop. The repair cost was 330€.

Whoa, mechanical wear at that mileage? Sounds rough! I'm no expert, but are you certain it's the transfer case and not just low or degraded gear oil? Have you checked the oil level and condition? Maybe try a fluid change before condemning the gears?
