Avantime Headlight Range Control Fault

Hi, I'm having trouble with the headlights on my 2003 Renault Avantime, diesel engine. The headlight range control seems faulty. An error is stored, and a warning light is constantly on. The low beams are shining too far down or up, making it dangerous to drive at night. I've checked the headlight switch, and all the fuses seem okay. Could it be the control module, or something else? The car has 114691 km on the clock.

Sounds familiar. I had a similar issue with my Avantime. Intermittent headlight problems, warning lights, the whole nine yards. Have you checked the servomotors in the headlights themselves? Those things are known to fail and cause auto-leveling issues.

Thanks for the quick reply! The servomotors... Where exactly are they located, and is there any easy way to test them before I start tearing things apart?

They're inside the headlight units, attached to the reflectors. As for testing, not really an easy way without proper diagnostics tools. Honestly, given the symptoms, I'd suggest taking it to a workshop. They'll be able to pinpoint the exact cause, rather than you guessing and potentially making things worse. It may cost a bit, but in the long run will save you time and possibly money.

Thanks a lot for the advice! I took your suggestion and brought it to a workshop. Turns out, it was indeed a defective servomotor in the headlight. They replaced it, and now everything is working perfectly again. Cost me 1040€, but at least it's fixed!
