Avantime water sensor malfunction

I'm having an odd issue with my 2003 Renault Avantime diesel. The check engine light keeps coming on, and the error memory is showing a water sensor malfunction. The engine's running a bit rough too. I've checked the obvious things, but does anyone have any ideas?

Interesting. I had a similar issue with my Renault Espace. It turned out to be a dodgy connection to the sensor itself. Think of it like a loose wire on a lamp – sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Have you checked the cable and plug connection? A bit of moisture in there can cause all sorts of havoc.

Thanks for the tip! When you say 'dodgy connection,' do you mean visually inspected it, or did you test it with a multimeter? I'm trying to figure out how deep I need to dive into this.

I visually inspected it first and it looked ok, but the issue persisted. Eventually, a friend with more electrical know-how tested it with a multimeter and found an intermittent short. He said the plug was slightly corroded, causing the sensor to send erratic signals. He cleaned it up and the problem vanished for a while, but came back a few weeks later. I eventually ended up taking it to a workshop. Best 95€ I've ever spent.

Great, thanks for sharing your experience! I'll give the connection a thorough check, and if that doesn't fix it, I'll take it to a shop. I appreciate the help.
