Avensis Automatic Transmission Fault

My 2005 Toyota Avensis with a gasoline engine (87756 km) has an automatic transmission fault in parking position. It won't start, the check engine light is on, and the gearbox is slipping. Diagnostics show an error. Could a faulty control unit be the cause?

I had similar issues with my 2012 Opel Insignia: difficulty starting, check engine light, and transmission irregularities. Did you check the transmission sensor or try resetting the control unit?

Thanks, those issues sound familiar. Could you elaborate on your Opel Insignia situation? Was the control unit the root cause, and how did you confirm it?

It happened after 95000km. The garage confirmed the control unit was defective, a common issue, and recommended replacement. My car wouldn't start in Park. I'd recommend a trusted repair shop to diagnose it.

Thanks for the insights, it confirmed my fears. A technician diagnosed a defective control unit, with an estimated repair cost of 1000€.
