Avensis diesel engine power loss rough idle

My 2007 Toyota Avensis diesel is giving me headaches. The check engine light is on, the engine power is noticeably reduced, and when I accelerate, it's like a smoke machine! I've been reading online about crankcase ventilation valves... could that be it? Anyone experienced something similar?

I had a similar experience with my Avensis (diesel too). Those symptoms sound awfully familiar. How's the idle? Is it rough or fluctuating?

Thanks for the quick reply! The idle is definitely rough, especially when the engine is cold. It kind of stutters and shakes. Does that line up with your experience? Was it definitely the ventilation valve for you?

Yep, rough idle points to the same issue. While it could be something else, the combination of symptoms strongly suggests a defective crankcase ventilation. I'd recommend getting it checked at a workshop rather than attempting a DIY fix, especially if you're not 100% certain.

Alright, I appreciate the confirmation. It’s frustrating to think it could be a relatively 'simple' fix causing all these problems. I'll book it in with a mechanic ASAP. I'll post the outcome once it’s sorted. It seems the ventilation valve was indeed broken. Total repair cost: 360€.
